Eaglemount Excavation, LLC comes to Port Ludlow from Chimacum, about 20 minutes up SR 19 [VERIFY: travel time]. Port Ludlow is mostly sloped lots stepping down to the water, so the work here leans toward retaining walls, drainage and driveways that hold up through a wet winter. Dusty Larson runs the machine himself, which matters on a tight waterfront lot where the house, the septic tank and the bank are all close together.

What we do in Port Ludlow

Retaining walls and rock walls are the most common request: holding a cut bank behind a house, terracing a slope so it can be used, or rebuilding a wall that has leaned after too many wet winters. Close behind is drainage, meaning French drains and curtain drains that catch water above the house before it reaches the crawl space or the slope. We also do driveway grading and site prep for new homes and additions, utility trenches for water, power and septic connections, and land clearing on lots that have not been touched in years. Port Ludlow ground, permits and access

Port Ludlow lots sit on glacial till and clay that step down toward Ludlow Bay, Paradise Bay and Hood Canal. Winter rain from October through March soaks into that ground slowly, then moves downhill along the top of the hardpan and shows up as a wet bank, a slumping cut or a damp crawl space on the lot below. Waterfront lots add a bluff or bulkhead at the bottom, and anything near the shoreline or on a steep slope falls under the Critical Areas Ordinance, JCC 18.22, plus shoreline rules, which limit how much can be cut, filled or cleared.

Permits go through Jefferson County Department of Community Development in Port Townsend, and septic through Jefferson County Environmental Health. Inside the Port Ludlow community, North Bay and South Bay streets also have association rules that can affect a contractor’s hours, access and what gets built [VERIFY: Port Ludlow Village Council / HOA rules]. Nordland and Marrowstone Island have the same county permits, the same till with sandy bluff edges along the shore, and one road on and off the island.

Access on Oak Bay Road and Paradise Bay Road is straightforward. Inside the community, the streets are narrow and curving, driveways are short and steep, and there is often nowhere to stage material except the road, so we plan the trailer and the spoil pile before the machine shows up.

Getting there from Chimacum

Two ways, both about 20 minutes [VERIFY: travel time]. The inland route is SR 19 south through Beaver Valley and in on Oak Bay Road or Paradise Bay Road. The water side is Oak Bay Road all the way south from Port Hadlock, past Mats Mats and into Port Ludlow. For Nordland and Marrowstone Island we go east from Port Hadlock on Oak Bay Road to Flagler Road and across Indian Island.
