Excavation Contractors Serving Sequim, WA

Eaglemount Excavation, LLC is a small, owner-operated excavation contractor based in Chimacum, WA, in Jefferson County, and serves Sequim as a stretch market about 45 minutes west on US 101 [VERIFY: travel time] [VERIFY: whether Sequim stays in the service area]. Owner-operator Dusty Larson takes Sequim, Dungeness, Carlsborg, Agnew and Blyn jobs when the schedule allows: driveway grading, home site preparation, arena leveling on horse properties, French drains and yard drainage, utility trenches, land clearing and retaining walls. Sequim sits in the Olympic rain shadow, so its prairie soils are drier and sandier than the clay and hardpan on the Jefferson County side, and old irrigation ditches cross many lots. Sequim is in Clallam County, so permits go through Clallam County Department of Community Development, or the City of Sequim inside city limits, not the Jefferson County offices we use at home. Eaglemount holds WA L&I license EAGLEEL755LZ with a $30,000 bond and $1,000,000 in liability coverage.

Eaglemount Excavation, LLC is based in Chimacum, in Jefferson County, and Sequim is the far end of where we go: about 45 minutes west by SR 20 and US 101 [VERIFY: travel time]. We take Sequim jobs when the schedule allows [VERIFY: whether Sequim stays in the service area]. Most of what we do there is what we do at home, just in drier ground: driveway grading, arena leveling and site prep on horse properties, drainage and trenching.

What we do in Sequim

Sequim is horse country, so arena leveling, driveway grading and building pad prep top the list. Utility trenches for water lines, power and septic connections dig easier in Sequim’s outwash gravel than in Chimacum clay. Drainage still matters on the lower Dungeness lots and anywhere an old irrigation ditch was filled in and now sends water where it should not go. Land clearing and retaining walls come up on the slopes toward Bell Hill and Lost Mountain. Recent work is on the projects page.

Sequim ground, permits and access

Sequim sits in the Olympic rain shadow, and it shows in the ground. The Sequim prairie and the Dungeness valley are glacial outwash: sand, gravel and river cobbles that drain fast, unlike the glacial till, hardpan and clay that hold water on the Jefferson County side of Discovery Bay. Trenches stay dry, grading goes quickly and a driveway base compacts well. The catches are the old irrigation ditches that cross the prairie, some still carrying water and some filled in decades ago, and the cobbles and high water table close to the Dungeness River. Toward Bell Hill and Lost Mountain the ground climbs and the till comes back.

Permits are the big difference from home. Sequim is in Clallam County, so land-use, grading and building permits go through Clallam County Department of Community Development, or the City of Sequim inside city limits, and septic through Clallam County Environmental Health. Clallam has its own critical areas and clearing rules, and irrigation district ditches carry their own easements, so we check what applies before the machine goes on the trailer [VERIFY: Clallam County permit experience]. We call 811 before any trench, same as in Jefferson County.

Access is the easiest of any town we serve. Old Olympic Highway, Sequim-Dungeness Way, Woodcock Road and Kitchen-Dick Road are flat, and prairie lots have room to stage material and turn a trailer.

Getting there from Chimacum

From the shop we take SR 20 west along Discovery Bay, join US 101 at the head of the bay, and follow 101 past Gardiner and Blyn and along Sequim Bay into Sequim. That is about 45 minutes without a trailer, longer with one [VERIFY: travel time]. Because it is the longest run we make, we try to group Sequim jobs and build the drive into the estimate. Questions from Sequim property owners

How long does it take you to get to Sequim from Chimacum?

About 45 minutes [VERIFY: travel time]. From Chimacum we take SR 20 west past Discovery Bay to US 101, then 101 through Blyn and along Sequim Bay into town. Dungeness and Carlsborg add a few minutes past that. Because it is the longest run we make, travel time is part of the estimate and we group Sequim jobs when we can. Which permit office handles Sequim excavation permits?

Clallam County Department of Community Development for county land, or the City of Sequim for lots inside city limits. Sequim is in Clallam County, so the Jefferson County offices we deal with at home do not apply. Septic goes through Clallam County Environmental Health. Rules for grading, clearing and work near the Dungeness River and its ditches differ from Jefferson County's, so we check them job by job. [VERIFY: who pulls Clallam County permits]

What is the ground like in Sequim?

Drier and sandier than Jefferson County. Sequim sits in the rain shadow of the Olympics, and the Sequim prairie and Dungeness valley are mostly glacial outwash, meaning sand, gravel and cobbles that drain fast instead of the clay and hardpan we dig in Chimacum. That makes trenching and grading easier, but old irrigation ditches, river cobbles and the high water table near the Dungeness still surprise people.

Which Sequim areas do you work in?

Sequim, Dungeness, Carlsborg, Agnew, Blyn and the horse properties on the prairie between them, along Old Olympic Highway, Sequim-Dungeness Way, Woodcock Road and Kitchen-Dick Road. Diamond Point and Gardiner, on the Jefferson County side of the line, are on the same run and closer to us. [VERIFY: whether Sequim stays in the service area, and how far west]
